Italian Front

from 23 May 1915 to 6 November 1918

The Italian Front was the theatre of the First World War where Italy fought Austria-Hungary along a line from the Alps to the Adriatic. Italy joined the Allies in 1915, after being promised territory in the secret Treaty of London, and Italian armies launched repeated offensives along the Isonzo river, with twelve battles in all, at very high cost. Much of the war was fought in high mountains, with soldiers living on glaciers and tunnelling through rock. In late 1917 Austro-Hungarian and German forces broke through at Caporetto, forcing a long Italian retreat to the Piave river. Italy recovered, and a final offensive at Vittorio Veneto in 1918 led to the Austro-Hungarian collapse and an armistice.
