Construction of Hassan II Mosque

30 August 1993

The Hassan II Mosque is a large mosque on the Atlantic coast of Casablanca, and one of the biggest religious buildings in Africa. It was commissioned by King Hassan II and designed by the French architect Michel Pinseau, and part of the structure stands on a platform over the ocean. Thousands of Moroccan craftsmen worked on the zellige tilework, carved cedar and plaster, and marble, giving the building a strongly traditional appearance despite its modern engineering. Its minaret is among the tallest in the world. The prayer hall has a retractable roof and heated floors, and it is one of the few mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims are allowed to visit on guided tours.
