Construction of FNB Stadium

1989

The FNB Stadium, widely known as Soccer City, is a stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa, built in the late 1980s on the edge of Soweto. It was substantially rebuilt for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the first in Africa, when it received a new design inspired by an African clay pot, or calabash, and was enlarged to become the biggest stadium in the country. It hosted the opening match and the final of the tournament. The stadium has also been the site of major events in South African history, including the memorial service for Nelson Mandela in December 2013. It is the home ground of Kaizer Chiefs.
