Founding of Arab Maghreb Union

1989

The Arab Maghreb Union is a regional organization intended to promote economic and political cooperation among the countries of North Africa. It was founded by a treaty signed in Marrakesh by Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania, and its stated aim was eventually to create a common market. Its institutions were based in Rabat. In practice the union has achieved little, mainly because of the long-running rivalry between Morocco and Algeria over the status of Western Sahara, which led to the closing of the border between the two countries in the 1990s. The union's summits have been suspended for many years, and trade among its members remains low compared with other regions.
