Construction of Fernsehturm Berlin

3 October 1969

The Fernsehturm Berlin, or Berlin Television Tower, is a TV tower in the centre of Berlin, near Alexanderplatz. It was built by East Germany in the 1960s as a symbol of socialist achievement, in the district of Mitte, and opened in autumn 1969 to mark the twentieth anniversary of the German Democratic Republic. At 368 metres, it is the tallest structure in Germany. A sphere with a viewing platform and a revolving restaurant sits near the top, and when the sun shines on the sphere's steel panels, a cross-shaped reflection appears, which Berliners nicknamed the Pope's Revenge. The tower remains a landmark visible across much of the city.
