Construction of Canton Tower

30 September 2010

The Canton Tower is a television and sightseeing tower in Guangzhou, in southern China, on the south bank of the Pearl River. It was designed by the Dutch firm Information Based Architecture, and its twisting lattice of steel columns narrows at the middle, which gave it the local nickname of the slim waist. The tower opened just before the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou. It holds television and radio transmission equipment, together with observation decks, restaurants and an open-air thrill ride at the top. At the time it was among the tallest towers in the world, and it is illuminated at night in changing patterns, making it a landmark of the city's skyline.
