Release of LibreOffice

28 September 2010

LibreOffice is a free and open-source office suite that includes a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation program, drawing tool and database application. It was released by The Document Foundation, which was formed by developers and users of OpenOffice.org after Oracle took over Sun Microsystems and the future of that project looked uncertain. The new project forked the existing code and was backed by many Linux distributions, which soon replaced OpenOffice.org with it. LibreOffice supports the OpenDocument format and can also open and save Microsoft Office files. It is available for Windows, macOS and Linux, and it is widely used by individuals, businesses and public administrations looking for an alternative to proprietary software.
