Premiere of Downton Abbey

from 26 September 2010 to 25 December 2015

Downton Abbey is a British historical drama created and mostly written by Julian Fellowes, about the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants at a Yorkshire country estate in the early twentieth century. It opens in 1912 with the news of the sinking of the Titanic and follows the characters through the First World War and into the 1920s, showing the decline of the old social order. The house was played by Highclere Castle in Hampshire, and the cast included Maggie Smith as the sharp-tongued Dowager Countess, Hugh Bonneville and Michelle Dockery. It was broadcast on ITV and sold worldwide, winning many Emmy Awards. It was followed by feature films.
