Establishment of Iguaçu National Park

10 January 1939

Iguaçu National Park is a protected area in the state of Paraná in southern Brazil, which includes the Brazilian side of the Iguazu Falls, one of the greatest waterfalls in the world, along the border with Argentina. The river plunges over a broad cliff in some two hundred and seventy-five separate falls, with the most spectacular section, known as the Devil's Throat, at the border. The park protects a large area of Atlantic Forest, home to jaguars, tapirs, giant otters and a great variety of birds and butterflies. It was one of the first national parks created in Brazil and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1986, together with the Argentine park on the other bank.
