Carbon dioxide passes 330 ppm at Mauna Loa

May 1972

In May 1972 the monthly average concentration of carbon dioxide measured at Mauna Loa, Hawaii, reached 330.1 parts per million for the first time. Before the Industrial Revolution the air held about 280 ppm, a level that ice cores show had not been exceeded for hundreds of thousands of years. The NOAA record shows the concentration climbing a little faster almost every decade. It took place in May 1972.
