Construction of Munich Olympic Stadium

26 May 1972

The Munich Olympic Stadium was built as the main arena of the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in West Germany. Designed by the architect Gunter Behnisch with the engineer Frei Otto, it is known for its vast tent-like roof of transparent acrylic panels held up by steel cables and masts, which was meant to express a modern and open Germany. The Games were overshadowed by the massacre of Israeli athletes by Palestinian militants in the Olympic Village. The stadium later hosted the final of the 1974 FIFA World Cup, and the final of the 1988 European Championship, and it was the home of Bayern Munich until 2005. It is now used for concerts and events within the Olympiapark.
