Zinedine Zidane was born on 23 June 1972 in 16th arrondissement of Marseille. A French footballer and coach of Algerian descent, Zidane grew up in a tough district of Marseille and rose through Cannes and Bordeaux to Juventus and Real Madrid. A graceful playmaker, he scored twice in the 1998 World Cup final as France beat Brazil, won Euro 2000 and the Ballon d'Or in 1998, and scored a famous volley in the 2002 Champions League final. He retired after the 2006 World Cup final, in which he was sent off for headbutting an Italian opponent. As Real Madrid manager he won three consecutive Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018, a record in the modern competition.
