On 23 June 1972, President Richard Nixon signed the Education Amendments, which include Title IX, a short clause that says that no person shall be excluded from, denied the benefits of, or discriminated against on the basis of sex in any education programme or activity that receives federal funds. Written by Congresswomen Patsy Mink and Edith Green and Senator Birch Bayh, it was aimed at admissions and employment, but its greatest effect was in school sports, where girls' participation grew from fewer than 300,000 in high school in 1972 to about 3.4 million today, and the number of women in college athletics grew many times over.
