Birth of Yoshihide Suga

6 December 1948

Yoshihide Suga was born on 6 December 1948 in Akinomiya. A Japanese politician of the Liberal Democratic Party, Suga was born to a farming family in Akita Prefecture and worked his way up through local and then national politics. He served for nearly eight years as chief cabinet secretary under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, acting as the government's spokesman and manager, and succeeded Abe when he resigned in 2020. His term as prime minister, lasting about a year, focused on digitalizing government, cutting mobile phone fees and fighting climate change, but he was criticized for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Tokyo Olympics. He stepped down in 2021 without seeking another term.
