Origins of Unification Church

1 May 1954

The Unification Church is a new religious movement founded in Seoul by Sun Myung Moon, who taught that he had been called to complete Jesus Christ's mission. Its official name was originally the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity, and its theological text is the Divine Principle. The movement became widely known in the 1970s as its members, nicknamed Moonies by critics, recruited among young people in the West, and for its mass wedding ceremonies. It also developed business interests and media outlets, such as the Washington Times. It attracted controversy, including accusations of brainwashing and legal problems for Moon. After his death in 2012, leadership passed to his wife, Hak Ja Han, and the group renamed itself the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification.
