Theresa May was born on 1 October 1956 in Eastbourne. A British Conservative politician, May served as Home Secretary from 2010 to 2016 and became prime minister in July 2016 after David Cameron resigned following the Brexit referendum, the second woman to hold the post after Margaret Thatcher. She triggered the formal process of leaving the European Union in 2017 and called a snap election that year in which her party lost its majority. The withdrawal agreement she negotiated was rejected three times by Parliament, and she announced her resignation in 2019. She left the House of Commons in 2024 and sits in the House of Lords as Baroness May of Maidenhead.
