Tsai Ing-wen was born on 31 August 1956 in Zhongshan District. A Taiwanese politician and lawyer, Tsai was the first woman to be elected President of the Republic of China, which governs Taiwan, serving two terms from 2016 to 2024. A former trade negotiator who helped Taiwan join the World Trade Organization, she led the Democratic Progressive Party. Her presidency saw legalization of same-sex marriage, the strengthening of Taiwan's defense and a rejection of Beijing's view that the island belongs to the People's Republic of China, which raised tension in cross-strait relations. She was re-elected in 2020 and was succeeded by Lai Ching-te.
