Construction of Luzhniki Stadium

31 July 1956

Luzhniki Stadium is the national stadium of Russia, on the bank of the Moskva River in Moscow. It was built in the mid-1950s in a short time, opening as the Central Stadium named after Lenin, as part of a sports complex in the Luzhniki area. It was the main venue of the 1980 Summer Olympics, whose boycott by many Western nations marked the Cold War, and it later hosted the 1999 UEFA Champions League final. It was extensively reconstructed for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, when it staged the opening match and the final. It is the home ground of the Russian national football team.
