Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was born on 28 October 1956 in Aradan. An Iranian politician, Ahmadinejad was an engineer and a veteran of the Revolutionary Guards before becoming mayor of Tehran in 2003. He won the presidency in 2005 as a populist hardliner and served two terms, until 2013. His government expanded Iran's nuclear programme, leading to United Nations and Western sanctions, and he made inflammatory statements about Israel and cast doubt on the Holocaust, which drew widespread condemnation. His disputed re-election in 2009 provoked large protests, known as the Green Movement, which were suppressed. He later fell out with the Supreme Leader, and his attempts to run again in 2017 and 2021 were blocked by the electoral authorities.
