Founding of International Hydrographic Organization

21 June 1921

The International Hydrographic Organization is an intergovernmental body that coordinates the surveying and charting of the world's seas. It began as the International Hydrographic Bureau, established after a conference in London that brought together the hydrographic services of many maritime nations, and it is based in Monaco. Its purpose is to make sure that nautical charts and publications are accurate and consistent so that shipping is safe. It sets international standards for charts and electronic navigation, and it cooperates with other bodies on mapping the seabed. The bureau became the International Hydrographic Organization under a convention that came into force in 1970.
