Birth of Vladimir Putin

7 October 1952

Vladimir Putin was born on 7 October 1952 in V.F. Snegiryov Maternity Hospital No.6. A Russian politician and former intelligence officer, Putin served for years in the Soviet KGB, then worked in the administration of Saint Petersburg and Moscow before becoming prime minister in 1999 under Boris Yeltsin. He has been president of Russia, from 2000 to 2008 and again since 2012, with a term as prime minister in between, and constitutional changes in 2020 allow him to stay in power for longer. His rule has seen economic recovery, increasing centralisation of power and restrictions on political opposition and the media. He directed the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, for which the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant in 2023.
