Birth of Olaf Scholz

14 June 1958

Olaf Scholz was born on 14 June 1958 in Osnabrück. A German politician of the Social Democratic Party, Scholz trained as a lawyer and worked as a labour law specialist in Hamburg before becoming the city's First Mayor in 2011. He later served in Angela Merkel's government as finance minister and vice chancellor. In December 2021 he became chancellor, heading a three-party coalition of Social Democrats, Greens and Free Democrats. Three days after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 he announced a Zeitenwende, or turning point, including a large fund for the German armed forces. His coalition collapsed in November 2024, and his party lost the election in February 2025, after which he left the chancellorship.
