German military administration in occupied France during World War II

from 22 June 1940 to 4 October 1943

After the armistice of 22 June 1940, Nazi Germany occupied the north and west of France, including Paris and the Atlantic coast, while a French government under Marshal Pétain, based at Vichy, ruled the southern zone. The German Military Administration in France, headed by the Militärbefehlshaber in Frankreich, whose headquarters were in Paris, supervised the French civil authorities in the occupied zone. It requisitioned goods, imposed heavy occupation costs on France, controlled the press and carried out reprisals against resistance attacks. It also took part in the persecution of Jews, in cooperation with the SS and the Vichy authorities. German troops occupied the whole of France in November 1942, and the country was liberated in 1944.
