The Spanish Civil War began with a military uprising against the elected Republican government of Spain, led by generals including Francisco Franco and Emilio Mola. The country split between the Republicans, who were supported by the Soviet Union and by volunteers of the International Brigades, and the Nationalists, who received help from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. The bombing of Guernica in 1937 by the German Condor Legion became a symbol of the war's brutality, memorialised in Picasso's famous painting. Both sides committed atrocities, and hundreds of thousands of people died. The Nationalists won in the spring of 1939, and Franco ruled Spain as a dictator until his death in 1975.
