Narendra Modi was born on 17 September 1950 in Vadnagar. An Indian politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Modi began as a worker in the Hindu nationalist organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He was chief minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014, a period that included the 2002 communal riots, which led to controversy over his role, though courts did not convict him. He led the BJP to victory in the 2014 general election and became prime minister, and he was re-elected in 2019 and, with coalition partners, in 2024. His government has promoted infrastructure, digital and economic initiatives, and Hindu nationalist policies that have been criticised by opponents.
