Abdullah Gül was born on 29 October 1950 in Kayseri. A Turkish politician, Gul was the eleventh President of Turkey, serving from 2007 to 2014. A co-founder of the Justice and Development Party with Recep Tayyip Erdogan, he served as prime minister briefly in 2002-2003 and then as foreign minister, during which Turkey began membership negotiations with the European Union. His election to the presidency was opposed by the secularist establishment and the army, and it was only after a constitutional crisis that he was chosen. He later distanced himself from Erdogan's increasingly authoritarian politics, and he did not run again for office after leaving the presidency.
