Nadia Murad was born on 10 March 1993 in Kocho. A Yazidi human rights activist from Iraq, Murad was captured in 2014 when fighters of the Islamic State attacked her village of Kocho in the Sinjar region, killing many of the men and enslaving the women. She was held and abused for months before escaping, and began to speak publicly about sexual violence in conflict and the genocide of the Yazidi people. She was named a UN Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking, and shared the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize with the Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege. She has written a memoir, The Last Girl, and founded Nadia's Initiative.
