Founding of Transparency International

9 February 1993

Transparency International is a non-governmental organisation that campaigns against corruption worldwide. It was founded in Berlin by Peter Eigen, a former World Bank official who had become frustrated at the way corruption blocked development projects. It is best known for its Corruption Perceptions Index, first published in the mid-1990s, which ranks countries according to how corrupt their public sectors are seen to be. It also issues a Global Corruption Barometer and reports on topics such as political financing and public contracts. The organisation works through national chapters in many countries and advocates for reforms, though some governments have criticised its methodology and findings.
