Moon Jae-in was born on 24 January 1953 in Geoje. A South Korean politician and former human rights lawyer, Moon served as President of South Korea from 2017 to 2022. He had been chief of staff to President Roh Moo-hyun, and won the presidency in a snap election following the impeachment of Park Geun-hye. He pursued engagement with North Korea, meeting Kim Jong-un three times in 2018, and supported the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. His government introduced labor reforms and an expansion of social programs, and managed the early COVID-19 pandemic with widespread testing, but was criticized for rising housing prices. He left office after a single five-year term as required.
