Cristina Fernández de Kirchner was born on 19 February 1953 in Tolosa. An Argentine politician and lawyer, Fernandez de Kirchner was elected president in 2007, succeeding her husband Nestor Kirchner, and was re-elected in 2011. A member of the Peronist movement, she pursued left-leaning populist policies that expanded social welfare while using currency controls and price controls, and she clashed with the media and with creditors over the country's debt. She later served as vice president from 2019 to 2023 under Alberto Fernandez. She has faced a number of legal cases for corruption, including a conviction in 2022 for fraudulent administration, which she denounced as political persecution.
