Founding of Korean Stock Exchange

1953

The Korean Stock Exchange has its origins in the 1950s, in the years right after the Korean War, when South Korea was rebuilding its economy and the first securities exchange was set up in Seoul. The exchange developed as the country industrialised in the following decades, when large conglomerates called chaebol grew and listed their shares, and the KOSPI index became the main measure of the market. In 2005 the Korea Stock Exchange was merged with the futures exchange and the technology-oriented KOSDAQ market to form the Korea Exchange, with its main offices in Busan and Seoul. It is one of the larger exchanges in Asia, and is home to companies such as Samsung Electronics and Hyundai.
