Le Corbusier was born on 6 October 1887 in La Chaux-de-Fonds. A Swiss-born French architect and urban planner, Le Corbusier, born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, was one of the pioneers of modern architecture. He promoted functional buildings of reinforced concrete, with open plans, pilotis, roof gardens and ribbon windows, set out in his book Towards an Architecture in 1923. His works include the Villa Savoye near Paris, the Unité d'Habitation in Marseille, the chapel at Ronchamp and the planning of Chandigarh in India. He also devised the Modulor proportion system. Some of his buildings are on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and his urban ideas have been much debated.
