Erwin Schrödinger was born on 12 August 1887 in Vienna. An Austrian physicist, Schrödinger developed wave mechanics, one of the foundations of quantum theory. In 1926 he published the equation that bears his name, which describes how the quantum state of a physical system changes over time, and for this work he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933 with Paul Dirac. He is also known for the Schrödinger's cat thought experiment, devised in 1935 to illustrate the strange implications of quantum superposition. His book What Is Life?, published in 1944, inspired a generation of biologists. He left Germany after the Nazi rise to power, spent many years at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and returned to Vienna in 1956.
