Founding of Hamburger SV

29 September 1887

Hamburger SV, generally known as HSV, is a sports club in Hamburg best known for its football department. Its roots go back to a football club formed in the late nineteenth century, which merged with other clubs to form the present club in 1919. HSV was a founder member of the Bundesliga in 1963 and for decades was the only club never to be relegated from it. It won the German championship several times, and in 1983 it won the European Cup by defeating Juventus in Athens, with a goal by Felix Magath. The team, nicknamed the Dino for its unbroken record, was finally relegated in 2018, and it has since played in the second division.
