Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on 22 December 1887 in Erode. An Indian mathematician, Ramanujan grew up in poverty in southern India, and developed remarkable results in number theory, infinite series and continued fractions largely on his own, with little formal training. In 1913 he wrote to the Cambridge mathematician G. H. Hardy, who recognized his genius and brought him to England, where they collaborated for several years. Ramanujan's work on partitions, mock theta functions and the number pi continues to inspire research. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society but fell ill in England, returned to India and died young.
