Kurt Cobain was born on 20 February 1967 in Aberdeen. An American singer, guitarist and songwriter, Cobain was the frontman of Nirvana, the Seattle band that brought grunge into the mainstream. Their album Nevermind, released in 1991 with the single Smells Like Teen Spirit, displaced Michael Jackson at the top of the charts and made them leading voices of Generation X. He followed with In Utero in 1993, a rawer record. He struggled with chronic stomach pain, heroin addiction and the pressures of fame, and was found dead at his Seattle home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of twenty-seven.
