The Cambodian Civil War was fought between the government in Phnom Penh and the communist insurgency known as the Khmer Rouge, which was supported by North Vietnam and China. It broadened in 1970 when General Lon Nol overthrew Prince Norodom Sihanouk and established the Khmer Republic, and the country was drawn deeper into the war in neighbouring Vietnam, with American bombing of eastern Cambodia and a ground incursion. Sihanouk, in exile, joined forces with the Khmer Rouge, which gained support in the countryside. The Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh in April 1975 and, under Pol Pot, imposed a radical regime that emptied the cities and caused the deaths of an enormous number of Cambodians through execution, forced labour and famine.
