Apollo 1

27 January 1967

Apollo 1 was the first planned crewed mission of the Apollo program, which ended in disaster on the launch pad. During a launch rehearsal test in January 1967 at Cape Kennedy, a fire broke out in the command module and killed all three astronauts, Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee. The cabin was filled with pure oxygen at high pressure and contained flammable materials, and the hatch opened inward and could not be opened quickly. An investigation led to a major redesign of the spacecraft, including a new hatch and safer materials. Crewed flights resumed in October 1968 with Apollo 7, and the mission was officially renamed Apollo 1 in honor of the crew.
