Buzz Aldrin was born on 20 January 1930 in Mountainside Medical Center. An American astronaut and engineer, Aldrin was the lunar module pilot of Apollo 11, and in July 1969 he became the second person to walk on the Moon, shortly after Neil Armstrong. A West Point graduate and Korean War fighter pilot, he earned a doctorate at MIT with a thesis on orbital rendezvous techniques, which were vital for the Apollo missions. He had earlier flown on Gemini 12 and made a record spacewalk. After retiring from NASA he struggled with depression and alcoholism, then became an advocate for space exploration and for a future human mission to Mars.
