Founding of Bank for International Settlements

20 January 1930

The Bank for International Settlements, or BIS, is an international financial institution owned by central banks, with its headquarters in Basel, Switzerland. It was set up in 1930 under the Young Plan to handle the payment of German reparations after the First World War and to promote cooperation among central bankers, which makes it the oldest international financial organisation. After the reparations system collapsed in the early 1930s, it took on new roles as a forum for central banks and a provider of banking services to them. The BIS hosts the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, which produces the international banking standards known as the Basel Accords. Its work is mostly done out of public view and is aimed at financial stability.
