Astrid Lindgren was born on 14 November 1907 in Vimmerby Parish. A Swedish author, Lindgren wrote some of the most widely loved children's books in the world, above all the stories of Pippi Longstocking, the red-haired girl with extraordinary strength who lives alone with a horse and a monkey. She also created Karlsson-on-the-Roof, Emil of Lonneberga, Ronia the Robber's Daughter and The Brothers Lionheart. Her books have been translated into well over a hundred languages. She was also an outspoken campaigner for animal welfare and children's rights, helping to bring about Sweden's ban on corporal punishment, and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award is named for her.
