Establishment of Jasper National Park

14 September 1907

Jasper National Park is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, in the province of Alberta. It was first set aside as a forest reserve and became a national park, and it takes its name from Jasper Hawes, a fur trader of the North West Company. Its landscapes include the Columbia Icefield and Athabasca Glacier, Maligne Lake and Canyon and Mount Edith Cavell, and it shelters elk, bighorn sheep and grizzly bears. The park is part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1984, and it has a dark sky preserve. The Icefields Parkway links it to Banff National Park. In July 2024 a large wildfire destroyed about a third of the buildings in the town of Jasper.
