Founding of Bhutan

17 December 1907

Bhutan's monarchy began when Ugyen Wangchuck, the powerful governor of Trongsa, was chosen by an assembly of monks, officials and leading families to be the first hereditary king, or Druk Gyalpo. The kingdom had been unified in the seventeenth century by the Tibetan Buddhist lama Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, but later centuries brought rivalry among regional governors and a weakened central authority. Wangchuck's rule restored order and brought the country into closer, carefully managed contact with British India, formalised in a treaty in 1910. Bhutan kept its independence, signed a friendship treaty with India in 1949 and joined the United Nations in 1971. Since 2008 it has been a constitutional monarchy with an elected parliament.
