The Kingdom of Bulgaria was the Bulgarian state between the declaration of full independence from the Ottoman Empire and the abolition of the monarchy after the Second World War. Prince Ferdinand took the title of tsar when Bulgaria broke its remaining ties with the Ottomans. The country fought in the Balkan Wars and in the First World War on the losing side, losing territory in both. During the Second World War Tsar Boris III allied the country with Germany, but refused to send troops against the Soviet Union and did not deport Bulgaria's Jewish citizens, although Jews in Bulgarian-occupied territories were deported. A communist-led coup in 1944 brought a new government, and a referendum abolished the monarchy and declared a republic.
