The Book of Mormon was published in Palmyra, New York, by Joseph Smith, who said that he translated it from ancient golden plates revealed to him by an angel. It presents itself as an account of peoples who migrated to the Americas, and describes a visit by Jesus Christ to them after his resurrection. The Church of Christ, which later became The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was organised in April 1830, soon after the book appeared. Members of the movement regard it as scripture alongside the Bible, and it is now published in many languages. Historians and archaeologists outside the faith treat it as a nineteenth-century work and find no archaeological support for its account of ancient America.
