Birth of Arthur Miller

17 October 1915

Arthur Miller was born on 17 October 1915 in what is now the United States. An American playwright and essayist, Miller was one of the major dramatists of the twentieth century. His plays include All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, which won the Pulitzer Prize, The Crucible and A View from the Bridge. The Crucible, set during the Salem witch trials, was an allegory of McCarthyism, and in 1956 he was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee and convicted of contempt of Congress, a verdict later overturned. He was married for a time to Marilyn Monroe, and wrote the screenplay for her film The Misfits. His work explored guilt, responsibility and the pressures of the American dream.
