Shackleton's Endurance is crushed by the ice

from 21 November 1915 to 30 August 1916

In January 1915 Ernest Shackleton's ship Endurance became trapped by pack ice in the Weddell Sea, as he tried to cross Antarctica on foot, and on 21 November it was crushed and sank. His 27 men camped on the ice for five months, then reached Elephant Island in lifeboats. Shackleton and five others sailed 1,300 km in the 7-metre lifeboat James Caird to South Georgia, and crossed its unmapped mountains to reach a whaling station. After three failed attempts he rescued the men on 30 August 1916, and not one died. The wreck was found in 2022 at a depth of 3,008 metres.
