Augusto Pinochet was born on 25 November 1915 in Valparaíso. A Chilean army general, Pinochet came to power on 11 September 1973 when the military overthrew the socialist president Salvador Allende, who died during the attack on the presidential palace. He ruled as head of a junta and then as president until 1990, banning political parties, dissolving Congress and suppressing opposition through the secret police. Thousands of people were killed or disappeared and many more were tortured or driven into exile. His economic policies, guided by the Chicago Boys, liberalized the market, and he left office after losing a plebiscite in 1988. He was arrested in London in 1998 on a Spanish warrant.
