Adolf Hitler died on 30 April 1945 in Führerbunker, aged 56. An Austrian-born German politician, Hitler led the Nazi Party and became chancellor of Germany in January 1933, after which he turned the country into a one-party dictatorship under the title of Führer. His regime rearmed Germany, persecuted political opponents, Jews, Roma and others, and annexed Austria and Czech lands before invading Poland in September 1939, which began the Second World War in Europe. His government organised the Holocaust, the systematic murder of about six million Jews and millions of other victims. He took his own life in Berlin as Soviet troops closed in, days before Germany surrendered.
