Construction of Warsaw Chopin Airport

29 April 1934

Warsaw Chopin Airport, also known as Okecie after the district in which it lies, is the main airport of Poland and the base of the national carrier, LOT Polish Airlines. It opened in the spring of 1934 as the city's civil airport, and it was damaged during the Second World War, then rebuilt by the Polish authorities. It was given its present name in 2001 in honour of the composer Frederic Chopin, a native of the Warsaw region. The airport has been enlarged in stages and now has a modern terminal, and it is the busiest in the country. A new central airport is planned to be built between Warsaw and Lodz.
